Objective

Develop explosive acceleration and sudden deceleration with the ball.

Equipment

Instructions

  1. 1

    Dribble freely in a 15x15 yard area.

  2. 2

    On the coach's signal ("stop"), trap the ball dead under your sole.

  3. 3

    On "go", accelerate immediately in any direction.

  4. 4

    Vary the time between signals — 2 to 8 seconds — to keep players guessing.

Coaching Points

  • Trap the ball completely still — it should not roll when you stop.
  • Change direction on every "go" — do not just run the same line.
  • Stay light on your feet between signals so you can react instantly.

Age Notes

U8

Use a whistle instead of verbal commands and make it a game — last one to stop does five toe-taps.

Variations

  • Add multiple balls and players in the same grid — avoid collisions while reacting to signals.
  • Player calls their own stop-and-go to build self-directed movement.
