Objective

Develop rhythmic close control using alternating inside and outside touches.

Equipment

  • Ball
  • Cones

Instructions

  1. 1

    Stand with the ball at your feet, no cones needed.

  2. 2

    Touch the ball with the inside of your right foot to the right, then the outside of your right foot back to centre.

  3. 3

    Repeat continuously for 30 seconds, then switch to the left foot.

  4. 4

    Progress to moving forward slowly while maintaining the pattern.

Coaching Points

  • Soft touches — the ball should travel no more than 12 inches each way.
  • Stay on the balls of your feet throughout.
  • Build speed only once the rhythm is consistent.

Age Notes

U8

Do it standing still first — just alternate taps with no forward movement until it feels natural.

Variations

  • Add a cone gate 10 yards away and dribble through using the pattern.
  • Race a partner through a slalom to add competitive pressure.
