Objective

Aim passes accurately through small cone gates to develop directional passing.

Equipment

  • balls
  • cones

Instructions

  1. 1

Set up 4–6 mini gates (two cones, 1 yard apart) scattered across a 10x10 yard grid.

  2. 2

Partners stand on opposite sides of the grid.

  3. 3

Player A passes through any gate to Player B.

  4. 4

Player B controls and passes back through a different gate.

  5. 5

Each gate scored through earns 1 point. Play to 10 points.

Coaching Points

  • Pick your gate before you pass, not after.
  • Keep the ball on the ground — a rolling pass is easier to receive.
  • Firm pass: the ball should reach the gate without slowing down.

Age Notes

U8

Widen the gates to 2 yards if players are struggling to get passes through. Celebrate every gate scored.

Variations

  • Give each gate a color or number and call it out before the pass.
  • Use three players and pass in a rotation through the gates.
