Objective

Use the sole of the foot to drag the ball back and escape pressure.

Equipment

  • Ball
  • Cones

Instructions

  1. 1

    Dribble toward a cone defender.

  2. 2

    Place the sole of your foot on top of the ball and drag it straight back.

  3. 3

    Turn and accelerate in the opposite direction.

  4. 4

    Complete 10 reps alternating feet.

Coaching Points

  • Keep your weight on the standing leg so the dragging foot is free.
  • The drag must be smooth — a jabbing motion loses the ball.
  • Look up immediately after the drag to pick your next move.

Age Notes

U8

Practise standing still first — just drag the ball back and forward to feel the sole contact.

Variations

  • Drag back then push to the side instead of going straight back.
  • Add a second cone to dribble to after the drag.
